Arsenal defeated Lyon 3-0 in a friendly match played in Dubai as players who were not competing in the World Cup in Qatar began getting ready for the Premier League’s return later in the month.

Gabriel started scoring in the game’s 19th minute with a header from a corner prior to Eddie Nketiah & Fabio Vieira adding quickfire strikes in the 33rd and 39th minutes.

Despite missing ten players in action with their national teams in Qatar, Mikel Arteta fielded his strongest possible lineup from those players left. In addition to the team’s captain, Mohamed Elneny, winger Reiss Nelson and midfielders Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny started in front of a back four consisting of Cedric, Gabriel, Rob Holding, and Kieran Tierney.

Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette was in Lyon’s starting lineup under former France coach Laurent Blanc. Still, the 31-year-old failed to score against his former employers before being substituted in the second half.

In the second half, both teams made significant adjustments, and Arteta brought in a number of players from Arsenal’s under-21 squad but did not score further goals.

After regulation, there was a penalty shootout as part of the Dubai Super Cup, and Arsenal came out on top 2-1 courtesy of three saves from goalkeeper Karl Hein to earn the additional point.

It was a terrific experience, Arteta remarked, “our first game here since I’ve been a manager.” We won and played at a high level, so I’m delighted about that. Credits to everyone involved.

When they take on Serie A champions AC Milan on Tuesday, Arsenal’s participation in the showcase competition will end. Liverpool is the fourth participant in the tournament.

The Premier League season for Arteta’s team will resume on Boxing Day against West Ham. Arteta’s team entered the World Cup break with a 5 points advantage over Manchester City at the top of the standings.

Gabriel Jesus, who just underwent knee surgery after grieving an injury during Brazil’s World Cup group-stage encounter against Cameroon, won’t be available for Arsenal when competitive play resumes. Although there isn’t a specific date for his comeback, he will probably be out for three months or so.

After the victory over Lyon

Arteta commented, “We know that he required some intervention in the knee.” However, we should take things daily and week by week and see where they lead.

Arteta added: “What it affects is who we are as a team because he gives us so much. So what we can do after that, when we know the timeframe of his recovery, and when we can have him back, we will look at the options and try to make the right decision.” Arteta was responding to the question of whether Arsenal will look to replace him in the January transfer window.

  • Dubai Super Cup: Why was there a penalty shootout in Arsenal vs Lyon?

The “Dubai Super Cup” is a series of friendlies in which these two teams compete, along with Liverpool and AC Milan. In a round-robin competition, they will each play two games and receive two points instead of one for a win and the typical three points for a tie.

However, following each of the four games, there will be penalty shootouts, with the victorious team earning an additional “bonus” point. This will enable both groups to gain points, with the team finishing first in the four-team table and crowned the winner.
