Indian Super League 2022-23: ATK Mohun Bagan vs Chennaiyin FC Highlights, Chennaiyin FC celebrates a comeback victory over ATK Mohun Bagan by 2-1 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata.
To win in Kolkata is a huge accomplishment for us: Thomas Brdaric, the head coach of Chennaiyin FC.
Chennaiyin FC, the two-time Hero Indian Super League (ISL) winners, upset ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. 2-1 in their inaugural encounter of the 2022-23 season at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata.
In the first half, Manvir Singh scored for the Mariners. Still, the Marina Machans responded with goals from Kwame Karikari and Rahim Ali after the interval, recording their first-ever win against ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. and becoming the third Hero ISL team.
On Monday, Chennaiyin FC defeated ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium to begin their 2022-23 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign (October 10).
The Mariners started without headline acquisition Florentin Pogba and talented winger Liston Colaco, but they still had a solid offensive lineup.
Visiting head coach Thomas Brdaric went with a primarily defensive lineup on the unfriendly territory.
Juan Ferrando’s team got off to a fast start, with newcomer Dimitri Petratos forcing an early save from Marina Machan’s goalkeeper Debjit Majumder.
With Chennaiyin FC struggling, ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. continued to control possession and create a few more nice chances down the left wing.
After being forced to defend deep for much of the first half, visitors overcommitted in the 27th minute on one of their lone first-half attempts.
This attempt left them wide open, and the Mariners used a quick counter-attack to force a 3-on-1 scenario.
Hugo Boumous’ beautiful touch set Petratos free on the right.
The Australian played in Manvir Singh, who chipped the ball over Majumder and into the bottom corner to give his team a well-earned 1-0 lead.
Chennaiyin FC struggled to generate anything noteworthy in the first half, save for a few dangerous crosses and long-range tries that soared far beyond the bar.
Brdaric’s side approached the tunnel slowly while the hosts appeared to have complete control.
As ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. flatters to deceive, Kwame Karikari leads the Chennaiyin FC fightback.
The second half began scrappily as both sides mostly challenged one other in midfield.
Substitute Edwin Vanspaul scored Chennaiyin’s opening goal with a long-range attempt that Vishal Kaith comfortably saved.
Then, however, a power outage at Salt Lake Stadium interrupted the game for almost 15 minutes before either team could get going.
This delay appeared to work to Chennaiyin’s advantage, as ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. lost all of the momentum they had built up in the first 50 minutes of the game.
As the Mariners resorted to playing on the counter, the Marina Machans showed greater control and better passing to maintain possession.
Brdaric then decided to bring in newcomer Kwame Karikari midway through the second quarter, which proved critical in the match’s conclusion.
Karikari grabbed onto Julius Duker’s excellent clipped pass over the top only a few minutes after going on.
Kaith came out and fouled the Chennaiyin FC striker while not possessing the ball, giving the visitors a chance.
Karikari scored an excellent penalty to tie the game at one.
The Salt Lake Stadium audience expected ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. to respond with greater zeal.
Meanwhile, the home team could not capitalize on their crowd base and could only force a few straightforward saves from Majumder.
They eventually paid the price as Chennaiyin FC stung them on the counter.
Following a box clearing, Sydney received the ball and released Karikari with a brilliantly weighted pass.
Rahim Ali smashed the ball from outside the box into the bottom corner after the striker cut it back.
The Marina Machans took a 2-1 lead out of nowhere.
The goal, along with a slew of handballs and fouls around the area, jolted Mohun Bagan A.C. awake.
They regain some of their creative passing and put the visitor’s defense under pressure.
Liston Colaco pushed Majumder into an excellent stop from a free-kick outside the area in the closing embers of the game. Substitute Aakash Sangwan also made a spectacular save in front of the goal.
At the same time, Fardin Ali headed a corner over the bar for the Mariners.
Chennaiyin FC eventually won the game and earned all three points in their opening encounter of the 2017 ISL season.
They have now won their first game in their last three seasons.
Meanwhile, ATK Mohun Bagan A.C. lost despite dominating possession (56%) and creating more opportunities.
They also had more shots (15 to 8) and shots on target (seven to three).

What are your thoughts on Kwame Karikari's performance?
Kari is a highly significant player. He should be able to make a difference (in the coming games).
I informed the lads that we wanted to make a difference.
We have bench players who may enter the game at any time and make a difference. We have a large team, and Kari is a member of it.
He is pretty humble and modest about his status. We know his abilities and are delighted that he joined our squad, which has paid off with his performance.
He delivered the second goal with the penalty (that he took) and then (the assist) for Rahim Ali.
A comeback win from @ChennaiyinFC away from home! π₯#ATKMBCFC #HeroISL #LetsFootball #ATKMohunBagan #ChennaiyinFC pic.twitter.com/NjZtLCMJYq
