Even for a manager of Potter’s caliber, renowned for making numerous changes weekly, eight is a lot. However, their last game was six weeks ago, so meticulous modifications have been expected. James’ return is the main draw, although other players, including Kepa Arrizabalaga, Thiago Silva, Marc Cucurella, Denis Zakaria, Raheem Sterling, Christian Pulisic, and Kai Havertz also make an appearance.
Bournemouth traveled to Newcastle last week to compete in the League Cup. They replace Chris Mepham, Ryan Christie, and Jaidon Anthony with Lloyd Kelly, Jack Stacey, and Jefferson Lerma this week, making three lineup changes.
Chelsea promptly struck, seizing control of the match with their first Premier League goal since October. In the 16th minute, Mount’s sharp pass found Raheem Sterling unoccupied on the right wing. Amid Mark Travers’ rush, he expertly put a low ball for Havertz, who scored.
Bournemouth reacted forcefully for a brief period, but Chelsea quickly regained control, and eight minutes later, Mount increased their lead. Havertz took his time to find Mount once he had found it beyond the immediate neighborhood. Then Mount slammed a spectacular right-footed effort into the near post. Reece James and Sterling tested the goalkeeper Travers’ quickness just before halftime as the hosts put Bournemouth under pressure.
James could leave the field, but another injury took him off at Stamford Bridge after 52 minutes. Due to a knee injury, James has not been selected for the England World Cup team, but he is already back in the Chelsea lineup. Mount, in particular, continued giving Bournemouth trouble. Midway through the second half, he went on a decisive solo run and forced Travers into an incredible save.
With 11 minutes remaining, Bournemouth had its best chance. However, despite playing better in the second half, Gary O’Neil’s team had a miserable night as Ryan Christie could only shoot from a tight angle against Kepa’s knees after Denis Zakaria’s ball was cut out in midfield, allowing the visitors to advance aggressively. Credit to the victory, Chelsea now ranks ninth in the Premier League. Bournemouth sits three points above the relegation zone in 16th place.
