In a close match, Croatia beats Brazil 4-2 on penalties to advance as the first group to the semifinals. Before Bruno Petkovic’s equalizing goal with just a few seconds remaining extra time, Brazil, Neymar had given Brazil the lead in the extra period. Once more, winning in the penalty shootout to guarantee their place in the final four was Croatia.

After a thrilling 1-1 draw, Dominik Livakovic was the hero as Croatia defeated Brazil on penalties to advance to the World Cup semifinal.

Like many of the games in this tournament, the first half was a scrappy, cagey affair with few opportunities created by either side.

Vinicius Jr.’s curling shot has saved, and the excellent Joko Gvardiol charged down another attempt, but the Croatian’s pressing and midfield positioning effectively nullified both.

The second quarter got off to a better start for Tite’s team, with Neymar missing two opportunities.

The Brazil coach substituted Rodrygo and Antony from Manchester United to try and score. They produced the better chances, including another one-on-one opportunity for Neymar that Livakovic turned away.

As the Croatians appeared content to wait for more time, which is what happened, Livakovic made another vital stop to deny Lucas Paqueta.

Two minutes after Brozovic squandered a wonderful opportunity in extra time, Neymar equaled Pele’s Brazilian men’s scoring record of 77 goals by scoring and beating the goalie after exchanging passes with Pedro and Paqueta.

Three minutes from time, replacements Mislav Orsic and Bruno Petkovic collaborated, and the latter’s deflected shot beat Alisson. Then, Zlatko Dalic’s team was done.

Rodrygo’s penalty attempt was saved by Livakovic in the shootout, while Marquinhos’ penalty shot hit the post, knocking the Brazilians out of the competition as Croatia prevailed 4-2.

In contrast to Brazil’s 11 shots during the 120 minutes, Croatia only managed one shot on goal. Additionally, they made just nine total attempts on goal compared to 21 for their opponents. Zlatko Dalić’s team got their strategies spot on in midfield and vexed the Brazilians throughout this cagey game. However, Brazil can feel unjustly penalized because Livakovic’s allowed Serbia to play the better game.

  • Croatia vs Brazil | Croatia shows endurance to stun favorites

Brilliance from forward Neymar inscribed himself into Brazilian mythology by tying one of the country’s all-time greats, Pele, on 77 international goals. Brazil appeared to be laboring to an extra-time victory over their formidable opponents.

Before falling victim to Neymar’s brilliance in the first half of extra time, Croatia probed sensibly throughout while restraining and choking Brazil’s customary rhythm & it was almost checkmating.

Bruno Petkovic pounced on Mislav Orsic’s cross, taking advantage of a terrible Marquinhos deflection that caught Alisson off guard, to score the most recent equalizing goal in a World Cup match, sending the quarterfinal to penalties.

As Brazil’s Marquinhos and Rodrygo missed their penalty kicks, Croatia, who needed two shootouts and an extra-time victory to reach the final in 2018, maintained their composure.

Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Majer, Orsic & Luka Modric completed a flawless set of penalty kicks to ensure their team’s advancement to the tournament’s last four.

Following the game, manager Zlatko Dalic stated, “We strike the biggest favorites.”

Neymar compared it to a nightmare and said, “It feels like that.”

Croatia has now successfully exited the World Cup group stage three times, reaching at least the semifinals (1998, 2018, and 2022).

They will compete against Argentina, who advanced to the championship game after defeating the Netherlands on penalties. Is it a sign for the 2018 runners-up that the winner of the first quarterfinal match at both the 2014 & 2018 World Cups reached to win the competition?

Stars of the Show | Croatia vs Brazil | Quarterfinal Highlights

Dominik Livakovic: Spectacular performance to make multiple stops and once again was the hero during penalty kicks.
Luka Modric: Demonstrated his expertise, and Kovacic and Brozovic (both of whom were superb) controlled the midfield and kept Brazil off balance.
Neymar made most of Brazil’s openings and scored a stunning goal. The fifth player up was supposed to take a penalty, but he wasn’t necessary as they had already lost.
Josip Juranovic: The right defender put on a fantastic performance, locking down Vinicius Jr. and posing a threat in the future.

How was the scorching Selecao (Brazil) cooled?

The awesome favorites to win the World Cup are no longer advanced to the Semifinals of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, so they can’t complain too much. They had numerous excellent chances in the 2nd half, but Livakovic did an outstanding job of stopping them. Meanwhile, Croatia’s defense remained solid, their midfield was able to keep the ball with relative ease, and Brazil never had any real influence over the game’s pace. But, of course, they hardly ever experience that.

The decision by Brazil to start Richarlison, Raphinha, Vinicius Jr., and Neymar all at once backfired because Modric, Brozovic, and Kovacic controlled play in midfield by maintaining possession of the ball to relieve pressure on their defense. They could not pass the ball to that foursome frequently or early enough.

When Neymar gave Brazil the lead in the 1st half of extra time, it appeared that Tite’s team thought they had won it and survived an enormous scare. However, Croatia had a threat on the counter and was in this game for significant stretches.

They barely got started in this tournament, except for a few moments against South Korea and Serbia. Then, the hot favorites got out of the competition through Croatia’s excellent defense, masterful midfield, and inspired goalie, who turned them into lukewarm quarter-finalists. Neymar’s sobs provided the perfect ending.

    Where next for Brazil?

“When Brazil exits the World Cup, it usually seems like the death of a family member; this time, they believed their name was on the trophy. The wait has been twenty years, and it will soon be twenty-four. Once again, a European team is in the knockout stages. But, unfortunately, they are unable to pass the hurdle.

They were confident they would move past it this time. They were only four minutes away from winning this time, and if it had occurred, it would have been a well-deserved victory. However, it did not.

Now, Brazil can be brutal, and I wouldn’t want to be the departing coach because he’ll be criticized for everything from his coaching style to how he ties his shoelaces. People will start to dislike him now that he has failed at this. So they have traveled to a country with a 4.5 million-person population.

More than 210 million Brazilians believe they could coach more effectively. Now that melancholy has given way to wrath, and the knives will be drawn. Thiago Silva won’t be around anymore, and even Neymar left his future in the air before the World Cup.

He stated that it would probably be his final one, and by the time it was over, he had overcome with emotion. He claimed he couldn’t promise to continue to the next World Cup because he needed to think clearly.

It’s possible that this was his final match for Brazil, in which he scored a stunning goal to tie Pele’s record for goals scored by a Brazilian player. The fun part of this game was that the questions have posed in a tennis match-like fashion. Richarlison’s obvious lack of fitness benefited Croatia. Because he controls the media, it was simpler for Croatia to come out.

Brazil was frustrated, then Neymar scored a great goal. The great question was then whether Croatia could come back. With only four minutes of extra time remaining, Brazil brought Fred to seal down the midfield, but they caught on the break. Unfortunately, a thrilling game in a team sport like football came down to individual mistakes. Rodrygo and Marquinhos will probably be awake for a while,” the speaker said.
