Ecuador vs Senegal Highlights

On Sunday night, Senegal will take on the group’s winners, which is the one in which England is now leading.

Only two minutes had passed since Moises Caicedo had brought Ecuador level from a corner for the South Americans to advance in their place before the Chelsea defender’s superb volleyed winner.

The African team thoroughly deserved to advance from their World Cup group for the first time in 20 years, largely thanks to a performance that destroyed Ecuador in the first half. Ecuador entered the game knowing they only needed a point to advance.

Senegal’s dominance became apparent in the last second of the 1st half when Ismaila Sarr beat Hernan Galindez from 12 yards after being fouled in the area.

Although Caicedo briefly gave Ecuador hope in the middle of the second half, it was only a temporary respite as Senegal remained the more dangerous team even after Koulibaly’s goal.

Edouard Mendy’s goal was relatively untroubled as they jumped into second place to set up a last-16 match with the group’s victor.

With only a point needed to advance for the first time since 2006 and having drawn with the Netherlands in a game they easily should have won, Ecuador was given a minor edge in the form book.

Idrissa Gueye missed a great early chance for Senegal when Sarr took advantage of Ecuador’s aggressive full-backs and sprinted behind along the flank due to a shockingly gung-ho game plan.

At the break, Ecuador made two substitutions, and with a much-needed change in composition, the team eventually started to dictate the game’s tempo. However, when Caicedo stooped to turn in Torres’ flick from a corner, it still took them over 25 minutes to break down a resolute Senegal backline.

They wasted no time in abandoning their credentials after waiting so long to do so. Koulibaly would be more accustomed to using his head than his feet to attack a free-kick, but when Gueye’s ball fell to him, he finished with ease before Galindez was even aware of it.

Senegal advanced to the round of 16 at Ecuador’s cost, despite Ecuador’s best efforts to truly test Mendy and put their World Cup hopes on the line.
