Argentina vs South Africa 1-0 | Hockey world cup 2023 Day 1

The first quarter of the World Cup saw all-out offensive hockey from both Argentina and South Africa. The ball entered the circle numerous times for both teams, forcing both goalkeepers to be attentive, but neither team could seriously threaten the goal.

In the South African goal, Gowan Jones stepped up and kept the scores level as Argentina launched an offensive in the second quarter, earning three fast penalty corners. Argentina’s surge was stopped in the second quarter by two yellow cards given to Keenan and Catan, and the teams entered halftime tied.

Argentina had a better second half than the first, but despite winning their fifth and sixth penalty corners early in the half, they could not score. In the 43rd minute, Argentina scored a field goal to break the scoreless tie as Maico Casella outran Gowan Jones. A tiny deflection from a shot by Toscani blinded the talented goalkeeper. As the South African attack lacked penetration, Argentina maintained its slim lead until the end and earned all three points.

“Good to win the first match; we performed well enough,” remarked Maico Casella after being named player of the game. In my opinion, the number of penalty corners we won is good, and we will start converting more of them.

Both sides are assigned to Pool A, which includes France and Australia. Argentina’s 3-2 quarterfinal loss to the English squad eliminated them from the 2018 Hockey World Cup. This time, the team will strive to perform better and get their World Cup campaign off to a strong start.

In contrast, South Africa’s performance at the 2018 Hockey World Cup was poor, as they were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage. They face a tricky assignment because they are grouped alongside teams like Argentina and Australia, which are stronger than they are.

Australia vs France 8-0 | Hockey world cup 2023 Day 1

Australia got out to a fast start, demonstrating why they are the early favorites in the tournament. They scored the match’s opening goal due to a spectacular run by Tom Craig, who split the defense, passed to Tim Brand, and finished the fantastic move by getting a deflection on Craig’s effort. The second quarter saw France perform significantly better, but they didn’t use their opportunities, and Australia punished them with three goals in the final four minutes.

The second half started quickly for Australia, who had all the momentum going into the first. Four players touched the ball in the circle in a stunning team move before Tom Craig tapped it in. Then, Jeremy Hayward finished a fantastic hat trick with his third penalty corner goal.

In the 45th minute, Tom Brand added a third goal, becoming the second Australian to score a hat-trick in the match! Tom Wickham scored one more goal in the third period as Australia easily won 8-0 and earned all three points.

Tom Craig, who scored three goals and was named player of the game, said it was good to score goals, but winning felt better.
Since July last year, we haven’t participated in any tournament hockey, but we have prepared well for this and expect to get even better moving forward.

Australia vs France Team News | Hockey world cup 2023

Both sides are assigned to Pool A, including South Africa and Argentina. Australia will enter the World Cup with a good team and be the clear favorite. After losing to the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties in the 2018 Hockey World Cup semifinals, they were content to settle for the bronze medal.

In 2018, France also had a good World Cup campaign. In the quarterfinals, they were defeated by the Australian team 3-0.

In their tournament opener against Australia, France will have a difficult assignment. They must play exceptionally well if they want to win this game against an excellent Australian squad.

England vs Wales 5-0 | Hockey world cup 2023 Day 1

Nicholas Park’s game-winning goal in the first 20 seconds of the match gave England a great advantage and stunned Wales. However, Wales picked up the pace quickly, and the rest of the half was a competitive match with both teams exchanging attacks. With barely two minutes remaining in the half, England again scored at the ideal time to double their lead. Wales now had to try to tie the game in the second half.

In the third quarter, England scored twice to take complete control of the game. The game was effectively over for Wales when Liam Ansel scored his second goal of the match from a penalty corner in the 38th minute, and Phil Roper made his debut with a field goal in the 42nd.

England held steady and scored a fifth goal through Nicholas Bandurak in the 57th minute to complete a flawless victory and three points for England. Wales invested heavily in the assault in the final quarter, hoping to claw a goal back, but England stood fast.

Couldn’t have expected a better start to the competition, said Sam Ward, named player of the game. I want to maintain the momentum until the next game against India.

England vs Wales Team News | Hockey world cup 2023

Both sides are assigned to Pool D, which includes Spain and India’s host nation. The 2018 Hockey World Cup was successful for the English team. They performed admirably throughout the competition before being destroyed 6-0 by the reigning champions, Belgium, in the semifinals. The group will wish to overcome that setback and triumphantly begin their challenge.

Wales is preparing to compete in their first Hockey World Cup this year. They are grouped with three adamant teams this year, so building a name for themselves in their first World Cup appearance will be complicated. They have a difficult challenge as they prepare to play an entire English team in the tournament opener.

India vs Spain 2-0 | Hockey world cup 2023 Day 1

As the host nation India faced up against opponent Spain in a crucial Pool D match to round off Day 1 of the World Cup, the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela was jam-packed to the gills. The game was also attended by Padma Shri Dr. Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, Cdr RK Srivastava, Executive Director of Hockey India, and Shri Tayyab Ikram, President of the International Hockey Federation and Shri Prem Singh Tamang, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim.

Amit Rohidas capitalized on Harmanpreet’s blocked drag flick to bury a shot in the net, which was India’s 200th goal in the competition, as India took the lead at the end of the first quarter. Spain opened the game on the front foot and gave India some jitters. India scored again just before halftime on a goal by Hardik to go into the break with a commanding 2-0 advantage.

India had several opportunities to extend their advantage in the third quarter, most notably with a Harmanpreet Singh penalty shot, but Adrian Rafi easily stopped the attempt. In the third quarter, the men in blue also secured two penalty corners, but Harmanpreet Singh missed both of his shots. India persisted in its attacks, preventing Spain from applying pressure.

The Indian defense, masterfully led by goalkeeper Krishan Pathak, successfully thwarted all Spanish offensive attempts to get a goal back as India maintained a 2-0 lead and earned three significant points in Pool D.

Amit Rohidas, a fan favorite at home, received player of the game honors and commented, “Playing here felt extremely wonderful, and this was a great win. We appreciate the large and enthusiastic crowd who came out to support us.

When India won an Olympic medal again in Tokyo after 41 years, it rekindled expectations that winning a World Cup medal was also attainable. Since then, the squad has undergone significant changes in terms of people and outcomes.

A runner-up at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 sounds good—until you consider how badly Australia was defeated in the final. While the bench was put to the test by finishing third at the Asian Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup, the senior players had to make do with the sparse Pro League match-practice opportunities.
