Liverpool vs Lyon Highlights
Liverpool stained their return to action with a disappointing result as they were beaten 3–1 by Lyon in the first of their 2 mid-season friendlies.
Earlier in the week, the Reds traveled to Dubai for training camp but were hit with a devastating blow when Luis Diaz has forced to head back to the UK due to a setback in his knee injury recovery.
Even though seven players were away at the World Cup, Klopp could still select a potent starting lineup that featured Joel Matip, who was back from his absence.
Fabio Carvalho scored Liverpool’s opening goal in the first minute after a defender deflected Mohamed Salah’s shot into his path.
In the 14th minute, it appeared they would double their lead, but Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes expertly saved Salah’s penalty.
Harvey Elliott had to be replaced 15 minutes later due to an injury after leaving the field with his head in his hands. This gave Liverpool and Klopp pause.
In the 41st minute, Caoimhin Kelleher and Andy Robertson made a mistake that allowed Lyon to regain control of the game. Alexandre Lacazette took advantage to score to tie the score.
At halftime and after the break, both teams made numerous adjustments. Naby Keita made another comeback for Liverpool and played the final 30 minutes.
After the half, the Ligue 1 squad emerged significantly stronger. They went on to win the game justly with further goals from the vivacious Bradley Barcola and another from Alexandre Lacazette.
Despite the sad outcome for Klopp and Liverpool, the workout was crucial to improve their match fitness as they return to competitive play on December 22.
According to Klopp, who confirmed this after the game, Elliott has substituted as a precaution. With some World Cup participants returning, Liverpool should have been better prepared to play AC Milan on Friday.

Liverpool vs Lyon result | Elliott injury swipe a concern
Liverpool’s early-season troubles may not have been entirely the result of injuries, but they were undoubtedly a significant contributing factor.
Harvey Elliott leaving the field in the first half of this game shaking his head was not particularly promising.
The Reds could do without the young player missing any time on the field because he was one of the highlights of the 1st half of this season.
Carvalho makes a defense for his position
A void on the left side of the attack still exists after Liverpool suffered the harsh shock of losing Luis Diaz to injury once more and with Diogo Jota out until at least February.
Before the break, Darwin Nunez played in that position, but you believe the Uruguayan would benefit more from playing as a center forward.
That makes it more likely that opportunities will present themselves for someone like Carvalho, who could not have done more to establish a strong case than to score this early.
The young man will be hoping that this is the beginning of a significant post-World Cup phase for him personally.
