Rico Lewis, a 19-year-old Manchester City rookie, scored his first goal on Wednesday in the Man City vs Sevilla match as City recovered from behind to overcome Sevilla 3-1 to finish first in their dominant Champions League group stage.
While Riyad Mahrez and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez scored, the night belonged to Lewis because Erling Haaland was again out due to injury.
Pep Guardiola made 7 changes to his starting lineup even though City was already guaranteed to win Group G and Sevilla was guaranteed to finish third.
At the Etihad Stadium, 17-year-old right-back Lewis took advantage of his chance.
In the 31st minute, Rafa Mir gave Sevilla the lead with a perfectly placed header past City’s backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Lewis, who was joined in the starting lineup by Cole Palmer, 20, leveled the score in the 52nd minute when he pounced on an Alvarez slide-rule ball and fired home.
In doing so, Lewis, who is 17 and 346 days old, broke the record held by Karim Benzema, who was 17 and 352 days old when he scored for Lyon, to become the youngest player to score on their first Champions League start.
What a feat. Rico has a great player and so bright,” Guardiola added. “He is brilliant. He performed exceptionally well and made a great goal.
The men made an effort in the first half. Much better goals in the second half. I’m joyful for everybody.
After being set up by an exquisite pass from substitute Kevin de Bruyne, Alvarez displayed an excellent finish to give City the lead in the 73rd minute.
He took the ball around goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and fired into the net’s top.
After receiving another assist from Alvarez, Mahrez put the game away with a clinical finish.
With 14 points, City took first place in the group, while Borussia Dortmund, who finished second, also advanced to the round of 16 in the Manchester City vs Sevilla game.

Rico Lewis, Keep The Name In Mind, Always Remember | Man City vs Sevilla
Erling Haaland, a goal-scoring machine sidelined by sickness and a foot problem, was rejected by Guardiola, but he will likely be available for the match against Fulham on Saturday.
City’s last two Champions League matches ended in a scoreless draw, and their lackluster first-half performance prevented them from scoring.
While this was going on, Sevilla posed the more potent offensive threat, and before scoring in 31 minutes, Mir had already had two chances to do so.
Mir was given three yards of space from an Isco corner to loop a header into the far corner, which was awful defending from City’s perspective.
In the Man City vs Sevilla match Before the interval, City attempted nine attempts, but just one of those was successful.
At halftime, Guardiola changed his strategy by taking Jack Grealish off the pitch and substituting Rodri for another central midfielder.
According to Guardiola, Grealish was “the best player” in the 1st half, who removed him due to a combination of tactical and tiredness issues.
Because of this, the two City full-backs could play more like wingers than inverted midfielders, and Lewis, born in 2004, scored the equalizer.
Lewis achieved a skillful finish after Alvarez threaded a perfectly weighted ball through for him after a successful high press left Sevilla outnumbered.
Guardiola inserted De Bruyne from the bench as City struggled to create space against Sevilla’s low block despite the equalizer.
Throughout the game, Alvarez had been making some excellent runs behind the Sevilla center-backs.
No one had been able to see him until De Bruyne snapped up the ball on the halfway line & produced a superb ball in behind that he latched.
The striker turned around the goalkeeper and shot into the net’s roof.
After a shaky start to the season, Mahrez occasionally appeared to be feeling sorry for himself.
With eight minutes remaining, he found himself in the precise, selfless pass from Alvarez and finished brilliantly with the victory for Man City 3 -1 Sevilla.
