Their European campaign is hanging by the barest of threads due to Rangers’ 3-0 loss to Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team entered this game bottom of Group A after losing their first four Champions League group games.
As a result, they faced an uphill battle to prolong their time in Europe.
They knew they needed to perform as well as Ajax did against Liverpool at the Johan Cruyff Arena if they wanted to finish third and qualify for the Europa League knockout round.
Being up against a Napoli squad on an 11-match winning streak was never going to be simple.
So Luciano Spalletti put some of his key players, including Victor Osimhen, Piotr Zielinski, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia & Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, on the bench in the rematch, which his team won 3-0 at Ibrox.
There was little impact on Napoli’s performance. After 11 minutes, the hosts took the lead when Giovanni Simeone smashed a shot past Allan McGregor & into the far corner after Giovanni Di Lorenzo split the defense with a first-time pass from far out on the right.
Five minutes later, Mario Rui made a move on the left and found Simeone with a curling cross that he headed in from five yards, giving Napoli a 2-0 lead.
When Di Lorenzo set up Tanguy Ndombele for a shot that rebounded off the crossbar later, it appeared that the first half might end in a rout.
Even though Giacomo Raspadori gave the Rangers several reprieves, they could still avoid further harm before halftime.
The visitors made their first effort at goal at the 40-minute mark when Malik Tillman danced into the area, but Alex Meret made an incredible save to keep it out as Alfredo Morelos failed just before halftime.
After the restart, Simeone came close to scoring his third goal when he lobbed McGregor, but the ball bounced off the ground and landed on the roof of the net instead.
He then attempted to test the Rangers keeper from a tight angle, but McGregor was able to get low and make a save at his near post.
Morelos gave the Rangers their most excellent opportunity to get back into the game.
Ben Davies sent in a cross that appeared most likely to lead to a goal, but the Colombian let the ball run between his legs.
Leo Ostigard rose highest at a corner and sent the ball past McGregor to give Napoli a third late in the game.
Rangers can still qualify for the Europa League courtesy of a 3-0 loss for Ajax, but after suffering a 4-0 defeat to the Eredivisie giants in September, their prospects of winning on head-to-head are very minimal.

Despite having two goals, Simeone was one of many outstanding performers in the match.
At right-back, Di Lorenzo consistently displayed creative genius, and Kim Min-jae excelled in the middle of the defense.
Simeone nevertheless earned the win for setting the tone with his brace.
He was agonizingly close to winning the game, but his first hat trick in Napoli colors would have to wait.
