Portugal vs Switzerland Highlights

Portugal has beaten Switzerland 6-1 in the Round of 16 games with a hat-trick from Goncalo Ramos and goals from Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro, and Raphel Leo. Morocco and Portugal will now play in the quarterfinals. For the Swiss, Manuel Akanji was the only scorer.

The replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, sitting on the bench, scored a hat trick to help Portugal defeat Switzerland 6-1 and advance to the World Cup semifinals on Tuesday. Goncalo Ramos, a 21-year-old forward who only played for Portugal for the first time last month, started for his nation and showed the same level of accuracy with his finishes that Ronaldo was previously known for mainly.

Ramos started scoring in the 17th minute and added two more goals in the 51st and 67th. By that time, the 89,000-seat Lusail Stadium was awash. Ronaldo appeared as a substitute in the 72nd minute to thunderous applause.

Still, Portugal had already sealed the victory with goals from defenders Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro. In extra time, Rafael Leao added a late goal.

Switzerland scored credit to Manuel Akanji. Finally, after 1966 and 2006, Portugal reached the quarterfinals and will now face Morocco on Saturday. Fernando Santos, the head coach of Portugal, must now decide whether to remain with Ramos or bring back Ronaldo, the all-time leading scorer in men’s international soccer and one of the all-time greats.

Portugal vs Switzerland | Match Report | FIFA World Cup 2022

18′ – Goal – Portugal 1-0 Switzerland – Felix passes the ball to Ramos down the left side of the box, who takes a touch before unleashing a superb rising finish that screams past Sommer at his near post and just below the crossbar! His first for his nation.

That strike is fantastic. How wise of Fernando Santos to choose him! What a leap of joy he makes over the corner flag!

33′ – Goal! Portugal 2-0 Switzerland – Pepe is awake hours before Akanji, who is dreaming of mental math, and by the time he figures out 22/7, the ball got smashed past Sommer, and Bruno swings off a fantastic corner to the edge of the six-yard box.

43′ – Portugal Should Score Again! – As Portugal attacks after Shaqiri loses possession while pushing forward and Schar has clattered, Otavio moves the ball onto Bruno, and Bruno glides a lovely pass in behind, bringing Ramos back into the game. He lets it advance before punching it across the goal with his left foot, and Sommer does well to get down and tip away. That nearly ended the match.

51′ – Goal! Portugal 3-0 Switzerland – Goncalo Ramos is going on a trip in the entire match! Ramos gets up behind his man to flick Sommer hard at the near post as Dalot crosses low and runs to the right. He can hardly believe what is happening to him but enjoy the play.

55′ – Goal! Portugal 4-0 Switzerland – Portugal has located itself! Otavio executed a beautiful back heel when facing the touchline while under pressure.
Felix assumes control and maneuvers around a challenge before moving forward and connecting with Bruno, who has possibilities on both sides.

He then feeds Guerreiro into the finish to his left, and what a finish it was—leathered high across Sommer and into the roof! This might become a mess!

58′ – Goal! Portugal 4-1 Switzerland – Everyone in the middle misses a great ball, but Akanji avoids using his left foot and instead shines in with his right at the back post.

67′ – Goal! Portugal 5-1 Switzerland – Goncalo Ramos scores three times! It was a wonderful daydream! Big Bruno Fernandes wins the flick-on after a lengthy goal kick. Felix, who has been outstanding throughout the match, gets in behind Bernardo due to a soft touch that finds him as he collects.

Ramos glides onto the excellent pass, and as Sommer moves forward, he stabs underneath the ball to avoid the dive he anticipates. Football!

90’+2 – Goal! Portugal 6-1 Switzerland – Portugal has so much ability. They set Leao away down the left. He dips inside Fernandes and curls a glorious finish! It might’ve flicked off Akanji, so he went in loopy, but he might still have without the deflection because he appeared to hit it nicely.

Why Portugal ignored Ronaldo’s clamor to reach the quarterfinals

Despite reverting to a back three, which manager Murat Yakin, according to player Xherdan Shaqiri, described as a “surprise,” Switzerland had advanced in their third straight World Cup game before Ramos’ first kick.

They might not have been able to bounce back from the first setback because of that. Ramos and Otavio put Sommer to the test as Xherdan Shaqiri threatened with a rare Switzerland onslaught from a free kick. Portugal then took the lead in the first frame through Pepe.

He was completely unmarked as he hammered home a corner to shatter history. He was the second-oldest World Cup goal scorer – behind Roger Milla and the only record-breaker in the knockout rounds.

Both teams had chances to increase the score before halftime, but six minutes into the second half, Ramos scored the game’s third goal by slipping a rugged low cross from the once-excellent Diogo Dalot through Sommer’s legs.

Three became four very quickly as Switzerland’s heads dropped. Edmilson Fernandes’ careless defending gave Guerreiro a clear path forward, and he later connected with Ramos’ pass & fired into the roof of the net.

Switzerland had at least taken the lead thanks to Akanji’s close-range goal, but in just nine minutes, Ramos had won the match with a skillful dink that beat Sommer and left Switzerland scrambling to clear the ball from their goal.

Leao demonstrated the depth of quality at Portugal’s discarding by curling in a stunning sixth four minutes after coming off the pew, and the game started to seem more and more like a statement triumph.

That resulted in his nation’s 2nd largest World Cup win and Switzerland’s most significant loss in tournament history.

What does the result Imply?

On Saturday at 3 p.m., Portugal will play Morocco in the quarterfinals. Then, in the World Cup semifinals, the winner of that game will take on either England or France.
