Portugal vs Uruguay Highlights
In a Group H encounter, Portugal defeated Uruguay 2-0 behind a second-half hat trick by Bruno Fernandes to advance to the Round of 16. In the 54th minute, the score had finally broken when Fernandes’ cross was mishandled by Cristiano Ronaldo and went straight into the goal. With a second goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time, the Manchester United midfielder helped Portugal climb to the top of Group H with six points.
First, Sergio Rochet, and then the woodwork twice prevented Fernandes from scoring a poker. In the first half, Uruguay’s Rodrigo Bentancur came close to opening the scoring, and minutes after coming on to replace Darwin Nunez, Maxi Gomez rattled the post.
Although Cristiano Ronaldo did not touch Fernandes’ cross that went into the goal, the striker felt he had scored a second-half header.
When Ronaldo was substituted in the 90th minute, Jose Maria Gimenez has found to have handled the ball in the area, and Fernandes converted the penalty kick. Uruguay nearly tied the game when substitute Maxi Gomez struck a post, and Luis Suarez missed from close range.
Rodrigo Bentancur brilliantly threaded through the defense to give Uruguay the finest chance of the first half. Still, goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved him from scoring one of the great World Cup goals. Portugal dominated the dull contest.
Nuno Mendes has pulled off the field due to injury and departed in tears. Despite this, Portugal’s performance in the second half improved once play resumed after a fan protest.
Ronaldo got a transparent header at goal after. For him, Fernandes floated a cross into the box. However, he failed to touch the ball, which continued to travel through the air and into the corner.
With 15 minutes left, Uruguay made a comeback and began to play their finest football. Gomez’s first-time shot from the edge of the box hit the post, Suarez’s shot went wide when he could have scored, and Costa stopped Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s chip.
After the average time, Gimenez surged into a tackle on Fernandes, and his trailing hand made contact with the ball. Fernandes converted the resulting penalty after referee Alireza Faghani had told them to check the pitchside monitor.

Portugal vs Uruguay | What does the result mean?
Portugal, Brazil, and France have advanced to the Round of 16, but they still need one more point to top Group H. The only team still running for first place is Ghana, but the Africans might still need to catch up to South Korea and Uruguay.
The choice is clear for the two teams: win or leave. But even success might not be sufficient. If South Korea and Uruguay win, they will be tied on four points and only separated by goal differential; however, if Ghana defeats Uruguay, South Korea’s victory will be meaningless.
Goal difference, and perhaps goals scored, would serve as the final arbiter if Ghana earned a point and Korea won.
